Calcium Build-Up After a Fiberglass Pool Renovation: Causes, Removal & Prevention (2026)

You've just spent R35,000+ on a beautiful new fiberglass reline — and within a few months, you're seeing a chalky white film, rough patches at the waterline, or grey scale on the steps. This is calcium build-up, and it's one of the most common (and most preventable) post-renovation problems we're called out to in Gauteng. Here's the full story: why it happens, how to fix it without damaging the new gel coat, and how to make sure it never comes back.

Why does calcium build up on a fresh fiberglass reline?

Three reasons account for almost every case we see in Gauteng:

1. Fill water chemistry: Gauteng municipal water — particularly in Pretoria, Centurion and parts of Midrand — is naturally hard, with calcium hardness often above 250 ppm straight from the tap. Borehole water can be even higher.

2. High pH after fill: a freshly cured gel coat has a slightly alkaline surface for the first few weeks. Combined with municipal fill water that often runs at pH 8.0+, this pushes calcium out of solution and onto the surface.

3. Evaporation in summer: Highveld evaporation is brutal. Every litre of water that evaporates leaves its dissolved calcium behind, gradually concentrating it. Without weekly top-ups and chemistry checks, calcium hardness can climb past 500 ppm in a single summer.

How to identify calcium scale (vs other surface issues)

Calcium carbonate scale: chalky white film, brushes off slightly with a stiff brush, returns within days. Most common at the waterline and on steps.

Calcium silicate scale: harder, grey-white, does not brush off. Usually takes 6+ months to develop and indicates very high pH and calcium combined.

Confused with: gel coat blooming (a uniform cloudiness across the whole pool — different problem, different cause), or efflorescence on coping (different surface entirely).

Safe calcium removal on a new fiberglass surface

Critical: do NOT use muriatic acid washes, scale removers containing hydrochloric acid, or stiff wire brushes on a fiberglass surface less than 12 months old. These will permanently damage the gel coat.

Safe approach for soft calcium carbonate (under 6 months old):

1. Lower pool pH to 7.0–7.2 using dry acid (sodium bisulfate) over a week. This will gradually re-dissolve soft scale.

2. Brush weekly with a soft nylon pool brush only.

3. Run a sequestrant (HTH Stain & Scale, BioGuard Scale Inhibitor or equivalent) at maintenance dose.

Safe approach for hardened calcium silicate scale: a professional pumice stone treatment by an experienced pool renovator. Never DIY this — pumice on a fresh gel coat in untrained hands creates dull patches that won't polish out.

The 6 prevention rules — do these and scale will not return

1. Test calcium hardness monthly. Keep it between 200 and 400 ppm. Above 400, dilute by partially draining and refilling.

2. Test pH weekly. Hold it at 7.2–7.6 — never let it climb above 7.8.

3. Test total alkalinity monthly. Keep it at 80–120 ppm. High alkalinity drives scale formation.

4. Run a maintenance-dose scale inhibitor / sequestrant year-round if you live in Pretoria, Centurion, the East Rand or anywhere with hard fill water.

5. Top up evaporation losses weekly. Don't let the water level drop more than 30mm — concentration of dissolved solids is what tips you into scaling conditions.

6. If you fill from a borehole, test the source water for calcium and iron. Pre-treat with sequestrant before adding to the pool.

What if scale has been there for years?

Hardened scale on a 2+ year old fiberglass surface usually requires a professional acid wash with a buffered, fiberglass-safe descaler and mechanical pumice work. Done correctly by an experienced operator, the gel coat is preserved and the pool looks new again.

Done by an unqualified operator with the wrong acid concentration, the gel coat is destroyed and you face a full re-laminate. We've rescued (and unfortunately, also re-laminated) many DIY descaling jobs across Gauteng — please don't be one of them.
